New UCSF report identifies steps to increase diversity in medical workforce PR Web Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A new report, based in part on case studies of the UCSF School of Medicine and Stanford University School of Medicine, has determined five elements critical to increasing racial and ethnic diversity in medical schools and ultimately, the physician workforce. There have been overall increases in US medical school racial and ethnic diversity from the 1960s through the early 2000s, according to the study’s analysis of medical school and demographic trends. However, blacks, Latinos, American Indians and Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders remain underrepresented in medicine relative to their numbers in the U.S. population, the study authors report. When the masses hear the term "racial gulf," one of the issues that typically springs to mind is education. But that gulf has also long been a thorn in pharma's side when it comes to clinical trials. "The reasons that diverse patients have historically been under-represented in clinical trials comprise a complex problem set that requires collaborative solutions," said Michael Jones, senior director for Regional Clinical Operations at Eli Lilly. College sophomore Hani Khan had worked for three months as a stockroom clerk at a Hollister Co. clothing store in San Francisco when she was told the head scarf she wears in observance of Islam violated the company's "look policy." The policy instructs employees on clothing, hairstyles, makeup and accessories they may wear to work. When supervisors told Khan she had to remove the scarf, known as a hijab, to work at the store, she refused on religious grounds. A week later, she says, she was fired. More

U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama said she favored diversity on the nation's top court, wading into risky political waters as her husband weighs his second pick to the bench. Asked in an interview with MSNBC television her preference for the upcoming nomination to the Supreme Court, Obama said of President Barack Obama: "I think he knows what he's doing in this instance."
