We analyzed submissions from the 449 participants in The 2010 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity for criteria that includes: recruiting programs for people with disabilities; work/life and other accommodation benefits; diversity-awareness training that addresses people with disabilities; employee-resource groups for people with disabilities and/or caregivers; and communications, such as websites and other materials, that feature employees with disabilities. Research shows that newborns admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) have a higher-than-average risk of having been exposed to illegal drugs during pregnancy. If staff suspect prenatal drug exposure, they may test an infant's urine or feces for evidence of it. Some NICUs, though not all, have specific guidelines on what factors should trigger a newborn drug test. The new study, published in the journal Pediatrics, shows that even at a center with such guidelines, there are racial discrepancies in rates of drug screening. More

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, D-Fairport, N.Y., a long-time supporter of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, announced the formation of a task force to increase job opportunities in the health care profession for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Seventeen people from four centers - the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology, Gallaudet University in Washington, the National Center on Deaf Health Research based at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and Rochester General Health Systems — have formed an unprecedented partnership to start developing educational programs and expand opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing university-level students to enter health care professions. Drawing on economic data from 2,000 American families who were interviewed every few years between 1984 and 2007, researchers have found that the wealth disparity between white and black households has more than quadrupled, regardless of income bracket. In 1984, the average white family in the sample group held around $20,000 more in assets than the average black family, according to a study conducted by the Institute on Assets and Social Policy at Brandeis University. Following an emotional discussion before a packed house, the Logan City Council in Utah passed a controversial nondiscrimination law.
